The importance of the role of AFI’s Maya Declaration in the effort to increase financial inclusion in developing and emerging nations was recognized by members of the Commonwealth and La Francophonie during an outreach meeting with the Russia, the president of the G20, and several members of the G20 Development Working Group (DWG), on 21 April 2013 in Washington D.C.
Participants discussed financial inclusion in some of the smallest and most vulnerable developing countries worldwide, and welcomed the continued progress being made by numerous countries, most notably through financial inclusion commitments to the Maya Declaration.
“Financial inclusion represents an important pillar of the G20’s development agenda and we welcomed progress being made including through the Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI),” according to the meeting’s official outcome statement. “We welcomed both the Maya Declaration and have encouraged members to participate in this initiative.”
Attendees at the meeting included more than 20 developing country members of the Commonwealth and Francophonie from Africa, Asia, the Pacific and the Caribbean regions, nine G20 member countries and several prominent international organizations such as AFI, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), UNDP, OECD and the G24.
