The Membership Council of the Alliance for Financial Inclusion ratified the appointment of Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) Tarek Amer as the new Vice-Chairperson of the AFI Board of Directors, following the 3rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 5 September 2018 in Sochi, Russia. He will hold the appointment until the next AGM.
Governor Amer fills the vacancy created in May 2018 when then Vice-Chairman, Governor of Bangladesh Bank Fazle Kabir, assumed the role of Board Chairman after Ilan Goldfajn, Governor of Banco Central do Brasil relinquished the role by due to schedule constraints.
CBE Deputy Governor Lobna Helal continues to serve as Governor Amer’s alternate Board Member. In line with the Articles of Association, Governor Amer is expected to take over the role of Board Chairman from Governor Kabir in the subsequent Board term commencing at the 2019 AGM for continuity.
In addition to the appointment of the new Vice-Chairman, the Membership Council approved the establishment of the Audit Committee to support the Board in providing oversight on internal controls and risk management in AFI.
The Council also ratified the re-appointments of members of the following committees for a second term to run from 2018 AGM to 2020 AGM; the Budget and Finance Committee, Global Standards and Policy Committee, and Gender and Women’s Financial Inclusion Committee.
